Mini Sermon #30 (and Thanksgiving Message)

Special Sermon Lesson: Luke 17:11-19 (NRSV)Psalm: Psalm 100 (NRSV) Today I have chosen to break from the lectionary.  The reason is not only because it is “Thanksgiving Sunday,” an unofficial designation we in America give to the Sunday before Thanksgiving, although that is certainly part of it.  The main reason, however, is that due to the pandemic we at Florence Congregational have had to close our doors until such a time when we feel confident that we can reasonably ensure…

Church Closed 11/22

Florence Congregational Church will be temporarily closed on Sunday, November 22, 2020. We apologise for the short notice. If you have any questions, please call or email Rev. Averill. In place of our usual morning worship, an extra “mini-sermon” on the topic of Ezekiel 34 will be published on our website and through email by Sunday morning. God Bless and Stay Safe, Rev. Averill Elizabeth Blackburn

Mini Sermon #29

Sermon Lesson: Matthew 25:31-46 (NRSV)Alternate New Testament Lesson: Ephesians 1:15-23 (NRSV)Old Testament Lesson: Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24 (NRSV)Psalm: Psalm 100 (NRSV) (or, in the King James Version) Referenced Bible Passages: Genesis 1:26 (NRSV) What is the Christ the King Sunday? I always have difficulty with “Christ the King” or “Reign of Christ” Sunday.  First off, it doesn’t happen every year (at least in America), so it’s never really been fixed in my brain as something to look forward to (or at…

Advent & Christmas Services 2020

Advent is the time when Christians anticipate the birth of Christ . This year, Advent begins early, just after Thanksgiving on Sunday, Nov. 29 and going through to Sunday, Dec. 20, the fourth Sunday in Avent. Each Sunday the congregation will light a candle in our sanctuary during worship, bringing us closer and closer the Light of the World entering our lives. Due to Covid Restrictions, however, FCC will not be open for Christmas Eve worship. Instead, we will be…

Mini Sermon #28

Sermon Lesson: Matthew 25:14-20 (NRSV)Alternate New Testament Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 (NRSV)Old Testament Lesson: Judges 4:1-7 (NRSV)Psalm: Psalm 123 (NRSV) My dad, when I was growing up, had this annoying habit of sing-songing, “if you never use it… you will surely lose it … you’ve got a talent, use it for the Lord!”  He would sing it when I didn’t practice my clarinet.  He would remind me with the song that I had a debate team tournament coming up.  My…

Mini Sermon #27

Sermon Lesson: Matthew 25:1-13 (NRSV)Alternate New Testament Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (NRSV)Psalm: Psalm 78:1-7 (NRSV) (or, in King James Version) Referenced Bible Lesson: Matthew 22:36-40 (NRSV) Once again, with this particular parable, we step into the world of first century Palestine, the world of the historical Jesus.  I want to stress before we begin that this is a scenario that easily could have happened in Jesus’s time in any Galilean (or, indeed, Palestinian) village. Many modern readers think of it…
